North Woods

Like ramble its a large collections of trees and vegetation. Its the jungle of the Northern Part of the Central Park. Its a huge 90 acre area. If you want to get lost in the most densely populated island ( Manhattan) then this is the ideal place. The thick lush green vegetation and trees completely obscure the new York's tall buildings. It a great place for naturalists and bird watchers.


It is located in the northern part of the Central Park in its western half at the level of 105th to 109th street. Nearby attractions include Block House towards its north, Great Hill towards its south west and Harlem Meer with Lasker Rink and Pool towards its East. The ravine and the Loch are located towards its south.

Great Hill

Great Hill is one of the points of central park having the highest elevation form ground level. It is located in North-west part of the central park at the level of 104th-106th street. Nearby attractions include Block House and North Woods towards its North, Lasker Rink and Pool towards its North-East. The ravine and the pool are towards its South-East and the pool is towards its South. It is a great place for viewing the park, relaxing, picnicking and jogging.


During early years of the Park it used to be great spot to have a view of the nearly Hudson river, but due to high rise buildings during the last century, its no longer useful for that.


During summers its a beautiful meadow with lush green grass, green trees and grassy slopes.

Pilgrim Hill

Pilgrim Hill is a small hill located in the south-east central park at the level of 72nd to 73rd street, just to the south of the conservancy water, with its slope towards the north. Nearby landmarks include Terrace drive on the south and East drive on its west.


During the summer on can enjoy beautfiul hill side views. During snow season its its slpoe is favourite for sledding.


On top of it is a statue of a pilgrim hence giving the hill its name.

Tisch Children's Zoo

Central Park is a place equally interesting for childern and adults. One example of this is the Tisch Children's Zoo. It is located in the south-eastern part of the central park at the level of 65th to 66th street, in a small triagular area between the 65th Transverse drive, 66th street and 5th avenue.


The zoo is equally attractive for both childer and adults, but is designed specially keeping the kids in mind. Special arrangments are made so that childern can ge close with animal and birds and get some first hand experinece

Rumsey Playfield

Rumsey Playfield is a large sandy playfield located in the south-eastern Central Park. It is located on the east side of the of The Mall near its Northern end.It spans from 71st to 72nd street. Near by areas include East drive towards its East, The Mall and surrounidng areas towards its south. Terrace drive passes on its north .



It is mostly used as a playground for school kids which can use it thorugh out the year to enjoy variety of sports. In summers it can also be used to hold free concerts called the summerstage.


On the enterance of the playfield are two pillars with a small beautiful statue on the top.

Balto

Balto is the Bronze sculpture of Siberian Husky Sled Dog named Balto. It is located in the South-Eastern part of the Central Park, on the East Drive and 67th street level.It stands on a small rock with sled harness on his back, mouth open, tongue out and eyes looking towards the horizon, probably depicting Balto's struggle during historic 1925 serum run. In 1925 a diphtheria epidemic emerged in Nome, a city located on the Alaskan west coast. The only way to stop the epidemic was diphtheria antitoxin which was available in the city of Anchorage. Attempt to transport the anti-toxin by airplane failed. So it was decided to transport it by train, which alos stopped in the city of Nenana, still 667 miles away. The only option was to use sled dogs. The weather conditions were sever with temperatures as low as −23 °F and blizzards, making the visibility very poor. Balto's sled team was ahead of others and he was the leading dog. Dur to poor visibility the short time span the team had to rely only on Balto's instincts who made no mistake and delivered the anti-toxin to Nome in record 5 days and seven hours saving hundreds of lives. After the incident Balto became a hero and his statue was erected in central park in 1925.

Dene

Dene is a valley like area in the park form 66th to 72nd street,near the eastern border. Its northern end is the East Green.On its southern side is the Children s zoo.On its west is the east drive which separates it form The Mall and surrounding areas.


It stand's to its name which means a valley. It has small hills, vallies and curved pathways which attract and amuse the visitors.A rock and shelter with the same name are located in the southern part
